Evelyn De Morgan
[English Pre-Raphaelite Painter, 1855-1919]
The Angel of Death, 1880
oil on canvas,  H 48.75”, W 36.75”
This painting shows the dark Angel of Death, shrouded in a brown cloak, under which we can see grey hair, stooping over a woman unsure of her way. The Angel holds a scythe, and seems to be urging her to stand and go with him. Below her are thistles, behind her an arid land, signifying her hard path to this moment. Below him are spring flowers, behind him a river and a town, which symbolise the fact that the path of the Angel of Death is not to be feared. This demonstrates Evelyn’s spiritualist beliefs – that death is not to be feared, but to be welcomed, as the spirit moves from its earth-bound shell, into the spirit world.
